His Career:
After his education, Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike worked briefly in private legal practice before he ventured into politics. He was elected as the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) for two terms from 1999 to 2007. He distinguished himself as one of the best performing chairpersons of the council.
While he was in office, Ezebunwo served as Deputy President, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, in 2004 and was later elected the President of ALGON. He was also an African representative in the Commonwealth Local Governments Forum.

When he finished his tenure as LGA’s Executive chairman, he got appointed as the Chief of staff at the Government House in Port Harcourt. He was also assigned as the general manager of the campaign team during Governor Amaechi’s re-election campaign. On July 14th, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Rivers State for Education, and later as Minister of Education of the Federal Republic of Nigeria after Mrs. Riqqayatu was sacked. However, he resigned voluntarily to vie for Governorship of Rivers State on the People’s Democratic Party’s ticket. 
On December 8th, 2014, he won the Rivers State People’s Democratic Party gubernatorial election primaries and subsequently won the general elections in April the following year. On April 3rd, 2019, he was re-elected as the Governor of Rivers State in the 2019 general elections. 

Governor Wike’s Presidential Ambition:
On March 27, 2022, Governor Wike declares his intention to run for president of Nigeria under the umbrella Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In his speech, Wike vows to remove the wicked APC from power.

In his words, “To remove APC from power, I’m the person who can tell them enough is enough. We must take this power and I’m ready to take it for PDP. God is with us that’s why APC keeps failing every day.”
Gov Wike who stated this when he visited his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom at the Government House in Makurdi, the Benue State capital on Sunday said he was making his intention to contest for presidency known for the first time in Benue.

The Presidential hopeful who urged stakeholders to give him their mandates and not to sell their votes assured that he has the capacity to, “face this evil government.
“He queried those founding fathers who ran away from the party and still want to be recognized, saying, ” by the time you ran away, you sold your share as a founding father so you can no longer retain your position of founding fathers.
“I stood for this party. I work for this party since 1998. I have nowhere to run to and that’s why anything that happens to this party I take personally. I have never relented.
“In 2015, those who ran away made us lose the election. Today, they are crying but some of us stood and said PDP will not die.
“Some people want to use Nigeria to buy back their personal business. They talk about the private sector. Mention the private business that survives. Is it banks that your father had? Everybody is an employer of labour. Even in my house, I have 50 people who feast on me.
They should stop deceiving us. I have performed as a governor and carry my shoulders high anywhere. I have the capacity to face this evil government. Just give me the mandate. I will speak the truth to power and nothing but the truth. I have the capacity to move this country forward,” he said.
The presidential hopeful promised that if elected, security would be his topmost priority.

PDP Presidential Primary Election:
On May 28th, 2022 Governor Wike contested for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary elections, alongside other aspirants but lost to Atiku Abubakar.
The former Vice president of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar emerged PDP flag bearer.
Atiku defeated Wike to emerge the winner with 371 votes, winning his closest runner up Governor Nyesom Wike with 237 votes.

He championed the free distribution of books across the nation, and since 2011, over sixty million textbooks and library resource materials have been distributed.

Lamenting the outcome of the election, Wike said the North should not claim ownership of the country, saying Nigeria does not belong to a particular geo-political zone.
He said, “We have all it takes to do whatever we want to do. It is a matter of you to be fruitful. We cannot answer second-class citizens in Nigeria.
“We just used this one to tell them that enough is enough. We made them not to sleep, we made them not to eat, we made all of them from wherever they think they are coming from know that there is somebody who can take them on.
“This country does not belong to one particular zone. If people are afraid of talking, it is their business. I cannot be a second-class citizen in my country.
“They just want somebody they can control, somebody that will do whatever they want him to do, I will never be a party to that, the only people that can control me are Nigerians, not the few people that want to remain in power since the military regime
