Yetunde Barnabas is a fast rising Nollywood actress, movie producer, model, and beauty queen, she became famous at the age of 22, when she won the Most Beautiful Girl in Abuja 2016/2017, beauty pageant and Miss Tourism Nigeria 2019/2020 competition and she was nominated as the Promising Actress of the Year at the fifth edition of the prestigious, Nigerian Achievers’ Awards.
Yetunde Barnabas is also known for her role as Miss Pepeiye on Nigeria’s long running TV series, Papa Ajasco and Company, as well as several leading roles in the Yoruba movie industry.
Date of Birth, Age and state of Origin:
Yetunde Barnabas was born in Abuja on August 30, 1994, age (she will be 26 by August 30th). She hails from Kogi State.
Family Background and Childhood:
I am from Kogi State but my family is based in Abuja. I grew up in a Christian home and I am the first of three daughters. At a point, I relocated to Lagos for my university education. I lost my father while I was pretty young. Since he died in 2007, my mother has been the one playing a fatherly role to us and God has been merciful.
For my elementary education, I attended Love International Primary School in Abuja. For my secondary education, I went to two schools: King of Kings Secondary School and a government school; both in Abuja. I then studied Public Administration at the Distance Learning Institute of the University of Lagos. But before proceeding to the university, I attended Seriki Olopolo Production and Royal Arts Academy to learn more about acting. I still have plans to do more academically though.
When I told my parents I wanted to be an actor, they didn’t object to it, as I had been doing something similar from my days in the church. My mother is always thankful to God for where I am now. She believes God has answered her prayers.
Her Acting Career:
My life as an actor has been amazing because I have been getting jobs I never expected. I love what I do and I am good at it. I have yet to get to the point where I can say I make enough money, but people appreciate my acting skills and pay me. But I still want to get to the level of people such as Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and Genevieve Nnaji, and make more money acting. With time, I feel I will get better offers.
I started playing the role of Miss Pepeiye in the Papa Ajasco family series two years ago and it was my first comedy role. I heard about the audition and I went for it. It was not easy, as we went through a series of screening before I was finally picked. But going for the audition, I didn’t know they were looking for another Miss Pepeiye. When I found out, I was shocked and excited. When I was picked for the role, I felt I wouldn’t be able to play a funny character, but I followed the script and it has turned out well. I grew up watching Papa Ajasco and the Miss Pepeiye character. Playing the role is like a dream come true for me. I didn’t think I would qualify for the role, but I gave my best during audition. They were trying to rebrand at the time I auditioned for the role and I fit into what they were looking for.
Before I started playing Miss Pepeiye two years ago, I was already a beauty queen. I won Miss Olokun in 2013 and the Most Beautiful Girl in Abuja in 2017 and then later Miss Tourism Nigeria 2019/2020.
I am not a Yoruba actress but I get more jobs from that sector at the moment. I am a trained actor; so, I can act in English or Yoruba language. I don’t like people calling me a Yoruba actress, but I cannot deny my culture or where I am from. I do any job that comes my way but it happens that I am getting more Yoruba movies at the moment. It is possible for more English-speaking movies to come my way in the near future.
Papa Ajasco is one of my biggest achievements so far as it has opened doors and created opportunities for me. I am also a producer and I have used my movie to promote myself. I have produced four movies and I plan to release one of them, Omo Iya Osun, before the month runs out. As a model, I have done many jobs that fetched me money to produce my own movies. I also had sponsors for some of my movies.
Though production is stressful, we have people who handle different areas of the project. We have the production manager, location manager, director and a host of others. As a producer, the only thing that comes out of me is the money. Despite being a producer, it doesn’t affect me as an actor on the same set.
My role model is Beyonce and I have always admired her. There is no perfect human, but I like the fact that she is ambitious and hard-working. In the industry here in Nigeria, I grew up watching Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde. Then, I loved the fact that as a Yoruba woman, she was playing a major role in Nollywood. I pictured myself being another Yoruba superstar acting in English-speaking movies. Right now in the industry, I also like Mide Martins.
I am a completely different person from the Miss Pepeiye character. When I am Miss Pepeiye, I am funny, noisy and arrogant. People always commend me for playing an unbelievable role. Miss Pepeiye is a ‘slay’ queen and she uses extreme make-up. People who know me know that I don’t like wearing loud make-up and I am an introvert.
I don’t want to talk about my relationship, but I get advances from men, which is normal for a beautiful lady. Even in my industry, I have admirers but you have to be yourself and face what you are doing. If you know what you want, you will be focused and be nice to people. I don’t become rude to men whenever they try to woo me; I just decline politely.
I like to wear things that make me comfortable. I also like to follow trends.
